Files now hosted at archive.org

I’ve moved my file hosting from C-Side Media to the Internet Archive and switched the existing file links accordingly. If this causes any technical issues, please let me know – masks at csidemedia dot com.

Each episode post now has a nice little player embedded in it so you can play the file right from the web page, should you be so inclined. Subscribing is better, though.

I’ve also taken the opportunity to re-jig the early episodes so that they now have the same numbering both here and on Podiobooks.

Basically it was pushing up my hosting costs to have it on C-Side Media, and it’s also nice to make it available on the Internet Archive along with lots of other creative content.

City of Masks podcast: Episode 14

Episode 14.

Corius and the scholars invade the Temple and put their impersonation into effect. Tamas preaches a Personalist sermon on being one’s true self, and the wasps are suddenly deployed. In the subsequent confusion, Bass spots the murderer and gives chase.

Archpriest’s theme: Exaudi Domine” by Palestrina.
Outro bracketed by: The Witches’ Dance” by an anonymous English composer.

A longer episode this time, thanks largely to Tamas’s sermon. I did think about breaking at the end of the sermon but the subsequent break points work better if I don’t.

The denouement is about to denoue; next episode, the chase across the rooftops and swordfight! (I knew these were in the story long before I figured out who was being chased and why.)

Next project

One of my readers said to me the other day, “I’m waiting for the next one. There is going to be a next one?”

There is, but I haven’t decided exactly what yet – and you can help.

I’ve just posted Episode 12 of 18, meaning that we’re two-thirds of the way through the podcast. Some of you will also have read the rest of the story, either in the free ebook or by buying a print copy. So, what is working for you? What isn’t? What almost is, but just needs some adjustment? Let me know in the comments, either on this post or on the relevant podcast post.

It’s likely that the next book will be more explicitly science-fictional, by the way – by which I mean it will have a technological, not just a social, difference from our world as it is now. I struggle with how to market City of Masks, because it is definitely speculative fiction but it doesn’t fit neatly into “science fiction” (no advanced technology), “fantasy” (no magic) or even “alternate history” (no specific historical reference). “Slipstream” is a category hardly anyone has heard of, and it generally means something more postmodern and cynical than this anyway, but it may be the closest genre category.

And that’s the other thing I’m interested to find out. When you read fiction other than City of Masks, what fiction do you read? What genre do you think it is?

Talk to me.
