I’ve just posted Episode 12 of 18, meaning that we’re two-thirds of the way through the podcast. Some of you will also have read the rest of the story, either in the free ebook or by buying a print copy. So, what is working for you? What isn’t? What almost is, but just needs some adjustment? It’s likely that the next book will be more explicitly science-fictional, by the way – by which I mean it will have a technological, not just a social, difference from our world as it is now. I struggle with how to market City of Masks, because it is definitely speculative fiction but it doesn’t fit neatly into “science fiction” (no advanced technology), “fantasy” (no magic) or even “alternate history” (no specific historical reference). “Slipstream” is a category hardly anyone has heard of, and it generally means something more postmodern and cynical than this anyway, but it may be the closest genre category.<\/p>\n
And that’s the other thing I’m interested to find out. When you read fiction other than City of Masks, what fiction do you read? What genre do you think it is?<\/p>\n
