Very infuriating. A good character is most of the story enjoyment for me.
James Blish used to refer to “idiot plots” which are kept in motion by virtue of everyone in the book being an idiot.
The writers of The Simpsons have a similar phrase: “Who’s carrying the idiot ball?”
