I have never done this. I never bother writing down ideas, even if I forget them there’ll be another dozen along in a minute. Having ideas is not my problem, having enough time to write them as stories, that’s another matter… :-/

Worse is when you spend ages writing down an amazing idea you had and then read it back to discover that it either makes no sense or sounds a lot like a film you saw or book you read, lol.
I don’t trust dreams very much, their logic is often weird and not good for storytelling. You can get a good idea, but you can also get plenty of gibberish.
I mainly keep paper and pen beside my bed for ideas I have before I drop off to sleep, as if I can’t sleep I’ll think through stuff and most of it will be gone when I wake up, so I write down anything good. =]

Been there. Done that. “When I was older.” It’s been ten years, and I still don’t have the story that uses that line.

My favourite 3am one was “The Little Chouxmaker and the Elvis”. Which is the title of a story I’ve now written, but haven’t been able to sell.
