Granting robots legal personhood is mainly about being able to make them liable for damages and hence making sure they’re insured. Not necessarily the best way to achieve the goal, and a lot of people are slamming it.

  1. A lot of people have slammed legal personhood for companies over the decades, and I suspect the same slamming will occur here. And it isn’t a perfect vehicle for legal rights/responsibilities/liberties.

However, in the quarter century since I started properly considering issues of jurisprudence and society, I’ve yet to encounter a better idea; even simply changing the label from “person” to something else creates issues.

And it’s important to remember that being a person doesn’t mean having all the same rights/responsibilities/liberties: for example, we’ve never given babies a right to drive military vehicles.
