Here’s a chance to be an “early reader” for Digital Fiction. You don’t have to review or anything (though I’m sure it would be appreciated).

Digital Fiction specializes in reprint anthologies, so all the stories will have been previously published in pro or semipro markets.

Directly delivered to your Kindle.

This is a good summary of common beginners’ mistakes. The first one, in particular, I notice a lot, and not only in first novels.

I’ve been talking and posting about this very topic in the last month, having just finished editing a client’s first novel.

I’m happy to see that I’m right on track with Carolyn Haley, the guest blogger at Richard Adin’s “American Editor.”

“TIPS AND TRICKS FOR WRITERS”

Are you certain that being a writer is for you? Are you sure you’re a writer at all? Are you having an existential crisis, or a dilemma of purpose? Perhaps you are a cane toad. Consider these suggestions:

Look at the other people around you. If you’re talking to people who have been dead for years, then that’s a sure sign that you’re qualified to be a writer.

Try to levitate. Are you able to shift objects across a room without going near them? Can you switch appliances and lights on and off with thoughts alone? Can you make objects appear before you just by wishing? Then you may very well be a writer.

Achievement Unlocked: First professional sale!

Achievement Unlocked: First professional sale!

I’ve known about this for several months, but had to keep quiet about it while the editors decided which stories would be in which anthology. Now I can announce that my SF story currently titled “One-Eyed Man” will appear in Futuristica Volume 2 in November.

Two and a half years ago, nobody had ever agreed to publish one of my stories. I hadn’t even written more than a couple of stories. A year and a half ago, I made my first semi-professional sale. The rest consisted of basic ability, a little knowledge (increased by study), hard work and persistence.

I knew I could do this. I had got enough rejections of the “Really close, but no” type that I knew it was a matter of when, not if, I could cross that line and make a pro sale. But now it’s actually happened.

And I know I can do it again.

Periodically, I get people asking if I’ll mentor them. I don’t, because my schedule is tight enough that I don’t feel like I can take on another job and do it justice. But I know that there are people who do and it occurred to me that I could just ask…

Remember the 80s, when guys like William Gibson and Bruce Sterling gave us ridiculous visions of a future where you could connect your brain to a worldwide network of computers, and powerful megacorporations dominated the world?

Crazy, right?
