Well, I just had a long conversation with my wife while I made and ate dinner and then lay on the couch with the cat.
Which is remarkable only because she’s 11,000km away, and we were doing it over one of the several completely free videophone applications that are on our respective tablets. It was pretty much like being in the same room.
She was telling me about her niece’s boyfriend. He has a voice-controlled house.
We certainly are living in the future. It has rather more despots than I’d hoped for, though we can’t say nobody warned us about that; but the free videophone calls and voice-controlled houses are pretty sweet.
It gives a whole new meaning to Video dating.
We truly do live in the age of technology! The changes of our lifetimes are mind boggling.
I met my wife online just over 20 years ago. In those days, hardly anyone met online – it was even a bit unusual to have internet access from home – and a lot of people thought it was weird, and probably dangerous.
Ten years before that, I had never owned a computer. I’d used them at school – my year was, I think, the first, since I started high school in 1981 – but I didn’t own one, and wouldn’t for another five years. And ten years earlier still, most people had never even seen one except on TV or in movies, and they were room-sized. Now I carry two of them in my pockets most days.
My wife’s niece refuses to talk to her boyfriend’s house. She thinks it’s weird to talk to a house. I think she’s going to have to get used to it.
I don’t need to talk to the house; I’ll just talk to Alexa. And let Amazon control the ceiling fans, LOL.
