The building industry is looking down the barrel of disruption. Chinese companies, which are used to building rapidly, are poised to eat the lunch of anyone who thinks they can just carry on the same way they’ve always done.

When we wanted to build our house here in New Mexico (site location soil: 80% clay), we looked into ‘alternative’ building technology but then ran up against local building codes and permit office. We couldn’t afford the various engineering assessments and extended code requirements for any earth technology home so ended up with a stick built home straight outta’ the 50s. Seriously, the builders used the same floor layout that they’d started with right after the war. Stupid county!
That’s always the problem with anything like that. In NZ, you have to build to strict earthquake standards, so new styles of building are harder to get permits for. It can be done, though.
