You know what kind of people there aren’t enough stories about?

You know what kind of people there aren’t enough stories about?

Old people. Healthy, vigorous old people, in particular.

  1. There’s a manga (and now an anime) called Inuyashiki that might interest you.

The protagonist is a middle aged man who looks older than he really is. He’s meek, quiet, and kind — and his wife and kids treat him like dogshit. Shortly after moving into a new home, which his family hates, he discovers that he’s dying from stomach cancer, with only weeks left to live.

While walking through the park that night, overcome with emotion and despair… him and some random young man who happened to be standing nearby both get accidentally vaporized by a passing-by UFO. Who immediately go “whoops our bad”, and resurrect the two into robot bodies as a way of trying to make up for their mistake. However, the only robot bodies they had on hand are combat models, so Inuyashiki and this other kid suddenly wake up and discover that they’re not really human anymore. Inuyashiki decides to start helping people, while the kid becomes this rampaging nihilistic monster.

    It’s surprisingly good.

  2. That’s a good point. Although I write YA, so having the parents be real people is somewhat innovative, let alone the grans. (Although my fox matriarch is a pretty kick-ass old lady.) I should probably look at my new series in light of fleshing out the grandparents’ generation. The parents have a lot of influence, but I haven’t established parents for any of the parents, and I’m now wondering about them.
