We take beds for granted, but they’re a relatively recent phenomenon, historically.

We take beds for granted, but they’re a relatively recent phenomenon, historically. Also, without artificial light, people tend to sleep in two sessions rather than one, with a kind of meditative interval in the middle.

  1. Beds are not a recent phenomenon historically, although they may have become more common. There are lots of illustrations of beds in medieval art. The Victoria and Albert has an ivory carving of the scene were Jesus tells a man to take up his bed and walk. The bed is indeed a bed, and the carving is labeled “Early Frankish?” or at least was when I looked at it and photographed it some years back.
