  • Thorn Highrock

A plump, middle-aged Earthist woman who runs the racetrack in Illene. Wears a brown suit. An enthusiast for technology, she uses farspeakers as loudspeakers for her caller and promotes investment in the airhorse.

  • Steadfast

A prematurely balding and greying Silver, the Realm Benefit Party‘s Secretary of Information.

Betrays his master, Admirable Silverstones, in order to protect his family in the Second Siege of Lakeside Koslin. Uses the codename Mole in order to do so.

He is subsequently given safe passage out of Koslin and a new identity in exchange for his cooperation, with special clemency for all incidents in which he was involved which he confessed.

He also deals for clemency for other leaders of the RBP. The deal he is offered is amnesty for ordinary members of the Party provided they take the loyalty oath and commit to participation in public works to restore war damage; fair criminal trials for those who have committed what would be crimes at any other time, without their RBP membership being considered as a factor either for or against; any Golds to be attainted from their position for treason, and replaced with a member of their family if available who is prepared to swear the loyalty vow, otherwise by someone of the Realmgolds’ choice.

  • Snakemouth

Village at the mouth of the Snake River, where it meets the Sea of Turfrae. The clan head there is Sand.

Site of the landing by Tenacious Blackbluff during the Unification War. The few catheads in the village, after killing or disabling a number of the enemy, were killed by rifle fire, and the doghead villagers withdrew into the forest after a failed attempt to repel the superior, and better-armed, force. Without the intervention of the two Gryphon skyboats posted at Snakeport, they would have fared much worse.

  • Singleminded Soaper

A member of the Executive Committee of the Gnome Advancement League. He’s a well-off businessman (working in his hereditary trade as a soapmaker) with charitable interests, driven by his sincere Asterist faith; he’s a member of a lay order.

Wears a light-brown Victory suit. Salt-and-pepper eyebrows, and a plain, honest face.

  • Silver Class

Silvers are the merchants, administrators, tradespeople and general backbone of society. Unlike the distinction between the Gold Class and the Silver class, which is based on descent from the ruling families, the distinction between the Silver class and the Copper Class is not precisely defined. Manual versus non-manual work is part of it, but the more prosperous farmers and skilled workers are considered Silvers. One rule of thumb is whether one’s daily pay consists of silver or copper coins, though this is not the real origin of the name; it is based in ancient elven practice. (The three classes among the elves were given different coloured hair, using magical biotechnology, to distinguish them.)

The Silver class in Koskant largely supports Realmgold Victory, who is inclined to pay more attention to their interests than her predecessor, who favoured the Golds strongly.

  • Siege of Lakeside Koslin

There were two sieges of Lakeside Koslin during the Unification War. The first, by Admirable Silverstones and the Realm Benefit Party‘s forces, led to the withdrawal of Determined to the Tussocklands along with his troops and a number of civilians (humans, gnomes and dwarves).

They left behind booby-traps, which Silverstones used civilians (mostly gnomes and dwarves) to spring, forcing them ahead of his troops. Determined sent in aerial forces to rescue them, but a number died early in the action, including women, children and old people.

The second siege, by Unification forces, was barely worthy of the name, since the RBP forces were first manipulated through the treachery of Steadfast into maneuvering out of the way of the loyalists, and then broke and surrendered when confronted with evidence that their leader had abandoned them.

  • Salver

A prominent gnome in Gulfport, moderator of the debate between Bucket and Plait. Grey hair and beard, dark, tidy clothing; an upper servant.

  • Salvanusmouth

A city-state, built on an island near the mouth of the Salvanus River.

Its major export is mercenaries, famed for their incorruptible political neutrality. They act as palace guards and Realmgolds’ personal guards, mainly, and will defend their principals against insurrections, but are contractually excused from taking part in international disputes. Originally archers, they are now retrained as riflemen.

    Their native language is Tenus.

  • Rosie Printer

Born Industry of Rosewall. Rosie was originally a byname, based both on her name of affiliation and also on the fact that she is unusually pale-skinned and blushes readily.

Her great-grandmother on her mother’s side was the inventor of the pressure gun, and she is descended on her father’s side from a localgold of Rosewall (not closely enough to count as Gold Class).

She is first seen as an investor in the airhorse. She manages some of her family’s money, very competently.

Gave up her family connections and wealth and changed her name in order to oathbond with Dignified Printer.

    Associated Characters

    • Mother: Admiration Merchant
    • Father: Punctual of Rosewall (called “Early” by his oathmate) – when parents are interrogating her (or, presumably, her siblings) they speak in turn as a double act
    • Siblings: Punctual, Opportunity and Constant
    • Family butler: Courageous

She is thin and awkward, with flyaway hair and large spectacles. Speaks, as do all her family, in a “high” style using a large vocabulary. Good mathematician and competent inventor (trained in engineering at the University of Illene), creator of an adding machine and a calculating machine.

Briar Heathlake and Hope at Merrybourne helped her with a makeover, after which she gave up wearing the fashionable but unflattering clothes her mother bought for her in favour of outfits created by Mistress Pintuck.

  • Resplendance of Ashling

Rival of Hope at Merrybourne at the University of Illene, who beat her for the Highest Distinction. She never spoke to Hope, but undermined her with other students, apparently motivated by the conviction that a daughter of servants should not be at the same level as her, a Gold.

Her father Significant is on the Council of Mages.
