The new anthem of Koslin is “Forward Together,” an inspiring hymn to cooperation and unity. It includes the lines:
Like fingers on a hand,
like a rope of many strands,
we are strong together!
The cheerful, elderly Master-Mage, his face a landscape of wrinkles from many years of smiling. He is a High Mage (see magic) in mindmagic and lifemagic, and a member ex officio of the Council of Mages.
His name of affiliation is Taverner.
Personal seal: a falcon.
His secretary’s name is Joy.
Adviser Against is a position created by Victory. Recognising that, as a very powerful and intelligent person, she needs someone to argue against her ideas sometimes, she appointed a woman who was bold enough to criticise one of her decisions as her permanent Adviser Against.
The Adviser Against’s job is first to point out things that could go wrong as a result of Victory’s decisions, and then to come up with mitigations for those risks if Victory decides to proceed anyway.
The first, and current, Adviser Against’s personal name is Admiration.
Sometime Countygold of Upper Hills, with a demesne near Lakeside Koslin. Leader of the Realm Benefit Party.
A graduate of the College of Ancient Turfrae, which he attended at roughly the same time as Determined.
He is heavier set than Determined, with a brisk, decisive air.
He gives himself the title of “Protector” while temporarily in control of Denning during the Unification War.
His secretary is Steadfast, and the captain of his personal guard is called Sharp.
Commits suicide when cornered at the end of the war.
An inquiry agent, young, and just getting established at the time of MBFA. “A slender young man with an engaging grin, he wore a grey twill hat and a matching jacket over a round-collared dark blue shirt. The blue hinted gently at professional status, but light-brown trousers prevented it from being part of a Victory suit and suggested a tradesman. He could have had any of fifty occupations, and nobody passing him in the street would look twice at him.”
Inclined to set the hat at a cocky angle. He’s attracted to Briar Heathlake, but being a professional, doesn’t act on it.
Speaks, or at least understands, Dwarvish to some degree.
Gets assaulted by Silent Rock and Talker Tree when his inquiries about Truculent Roper become known.
Later impresses the Realmgolds’ Agents enough to be invited to join them, after saving Braise from an assassination attempt and helping to track down evidence against Roper.
Has a habit of whistling between his teeth, which annoys Briar (she subconsciously associates it with the teacher who took advantage of her when she was at school).
Baritone voice.
Gulfport boarding school for the Gold and upper Silver classes. They are taught at home until their childhood’s end rites, and are then sent to school until their adulthood rites. The expectation is that they will make contacts of lifelong value there.
Graduates include Victory, Patience, Magnanimous, and (in a different generation) Resplendence of Ashling.
Localgold of Northroad (just outside Lakeside Koslin) and owner of the Eye of Lakeside (see newspapers), later appointed as the Countygold of Lakeside Koslin. Sensible, ex-military. Appointed over the camp council at the refugee camp in Koslinbend.
Gnome, manager of the Clever Man’s Works until recruited by Amiable to be Operations Director of the Research Institute.
Oathmate: Fold.
Children: Linkage (wants to go to Clerks’ College) and Loom (wants to go to University of Illene).
Secretary at the Institute: Purity (a human woman).
Older than most of the other gnomes at the Works, who call him “Uncle Gizmo”. Was in prison with Dignified Printer and taught him Dwarvish and mechanical engineering. He was part of the gnome underground, working with the human underground to oppose the worker-unfriendly policies of Realmgold Glorious, and was caught by the Realmgold’s Agents.
Sandy hair and beard, starting to go grey.
