  • Lizard People

    Height Average: 3’6″/105cm Range: 3’/90cm to 4’/120cm
Appearance The size of a gnome, bipedal, with a lizard tail, gills and a lizard’s head, but the torso and hands similar to a gnome’s.
Relations with Other Races: Dwarves Allies and trading partners.
Origin Unknown, assumed to be magical.
Location Underground streams and lakes throughout the continent; swamps.

Lizard people are a cheerful, diminutive race who inhabit watercourses and pools underground, plus swamps and marshes near where underground streams emerge. They trade with the dwarves for tools, mainly fishing spears and the like, for which they exchange valuable minerals found in the watercourses. It is speculated that they were created from gnome stock for the purpose of retrieving these minerals, which would otherwise be inaccessible to dwarves, but no historical record of their creation exists. If this is actually their origin, presumably they were created under a highly unusual contract by the Elves, who alone would have had the necessary skill. They speak a language derived from Dwarvish, but with many archaic features.
Because they live much of their lives in darkness, all lizard people learn by puberty to create magical lights which accompany them as they swim, at a short distance so that they do not draw attack onto the lizard people themselves. They also use magic to locate valuables underwater and to hunt their food (primarily fish). They generally do not use much other magic and have a simple material culture.

Several tribes of lizard people inhabit the swamp on the northern side of the Inland Sea.

  • Lakeside Koslin

Capital of Denning, located at the point where the Sea of Turfrae drains into the Koslin River. The river is on the south, the lake on the east and several low hills on the north. It is almost impossible to defend against modern weapons.

The plaza in front of the public library is often used for speechmaking from the library steps.

It is the demesne of a Countygold, like most significant cities. Prior to Unification, this Countygold was responsible for the city guard. The Countygold at the time of the Unification War was a woman who declared allegiance to the Realm Benefit Party, and was replaced by Localgold Abundance Northroad.

At the Farmers’ Gate on the north side, the North Road enters the city and becomes the Avenue of Triumph. Nearby, Bakers’ Lane leads to Heritage Plaza, an area of Hexagon-era Elven buildings dating back to the days of the Empire, when the city was an imperial port serving the Isle of Turfrae.

The nearby Realmgold’s Woods is a dense forest preserve. Fisk is not far beyond it.

  • Koslinbend

Locality in northern Gulfhead Province, beside the Koslin River, site of the refugee camp for Denningers fleeing the Siege of Lakeside Koslin. It was the northernmost inhabited demesne of Koskant.

The localgold, Prosperous, is a gruff man in his early sixties, with a weathered outdoor face. He is a Tried and True, but reluctantly comes to respect Victory and Determined when they offer to upgrade his port. At their oathbond ceremony, held offshore, he chokes up, remembering his own happy oathbond (he had been widowed some 12 years previously after 30 happy years).

  • Koslin Castle

Built after the Union of Koslin at the mouth of the Koslin River, inside a granite sea-stack, Koslin Castle is the home of the joint Realmgolds.

On the southern side, mirrors track the sun and reflect it into light-wells.

The castle is reached by a pair of air-ferries which run from either side of the river. There’s also a dock at the base for supplies to be brought in.

At the heart of the castle is a magnificent library, three stories high, filled with shelves and wrought-iron stairs and accessways, the accessways themselves lined with low bookcases (low enough to lean on and look down to the floor below).

The hollowing-out of the sea stack employed a number of dwarven and gnomish craftspeople who would otherwise have been working on the tunnel through the Earth Mother’s Rafters. The expense of these craftspeople was frequently brought up by conservative Golds, the Gulfport Herald, and Tried and True Party members of the Assembly.

  • Koslin

The name of the new realm formed by the Unification of Koskant and Denning, suggested by Reliable Chandler, secretary to Realmgold Determined. The name is after the river which formed the border between the two realms, and now runs down the middle of the united realm. Denning was to the north and west of the river, Koskant to the south and east.

The seal of Koslin is a river fish.

Capital: New Koslinmouth, on the formerly Koskant side of the river from the existing Southcliffs capital of Koslinmouth.

  • Koskant

Realm in which the Gryphon Clerks organisation was founded by Victory. Combined with Denning into the realm of Koslin at Unification.

The realm seal was a ship in full sail.

  • Isle of Turfrae

Former seat of the Elven Empire, the Isle of Turfrae now hosts the university known as the College of Ancient Turfrae. Most of the city that formerly covered the island is deserted and overgrown, including many of the villas owned by high-ranking elves. The university, and the town that serves it, occupy only the harbour area. However, this was the city centre in Empire times, and most of the great historic buildings that played important roles in the Imperial government are now part of the university campus.

The Code of Willing was proclaimed in the marketplace of Turfrae.

Some of the plants and animals on the island are products of elven lifemagic; a few of them are dangerous.

The Isle is located in the Inland Sea. It is not part of any realm, and is governed by the University Council. Any attempt by nearby realms (that is, by Koslin) to dominate it politically would be seen as a sign of imperial ambitions, so there’s a tightrope to walk when exerting influence on the Council, for example, to oppose Human Purity tendencies at the university.

  • Inner Council

Victory’s Inner Council is a hand-picked group of mostly high-ranking people who assist her in making decisions about governing the realm. It includes high-ranking military officers; the Master-Mage (who heads it); Clemency, the Senior Regional Scholar of Oversight (see Asterist scholar), a longwinded woman who uses an elaborate vocabulary; members of the Gold Class including Patience; the Deputy Chief Clerk Gracious; and the Adviser Against.

After Unification, members are added from former Denning, including Provincegolds Constance Northriver and Beauty Six Gorges and General Vigilance Soldier.
